I hope you all had a restful break. I was lucky enough to travel to beautiful Palm Cove in Queensland during the term break and while getting up at 4.00am to catch a flight at 7.35am was not my idea of fun, I had a very relaxing time; Jetstar did not lose my luggage and I even saw Mrs Tatarelli at the airport. I was in my happy place, reading books and listening to podcasts while relaxing by the pool.
One of the highlights of Term 3 is of course Mary MacKillop Feast Day and JJAMM Week, which we celebrate with fun activities such as a jam donut eating competition, a Mass and M Factor on Friday 12 August.
Year 12s completed their mid-year exams last week and are back into the swing of lessons and assignments.
We were delighted by our Stage 2 Research Project Results.
Five students achieved A+ and 18 students from the cohort of 68 achieved an A Grade. Well done to all students and staff for this extraordinary achievement.
I would like to acknowledge and celebrate the recipients of the Term 2 Principal’s Academic, and Know more, Do More, Be More Awards. These students received their certificates at our Thursday 28 August Awards Assembly. At the assembly, I encouraged all students to set some goals for this term and try to improve in some way. It is often persistence and hard work that pays off in the end.
I also urged students to use their mobile not just for social media but to expand their knowledge by reading books and listening to podcasts.
Three lucky students were given a copy of a new book called Time Wise by Amantha Imber. I promised that I would catch up with the girls over lunch in Term 4 to discuss the book.

Year 12 Mid-Year Exams
Incredibly, there are only a few months to go till it is the end of schooling for our Year 12 students. In Week 1 of Term 3 Year 12 students sat their midyear exams and many students have commented that they found this valuable preparation as it helped them identify their strengths and areas for improvement for the SACE exams that will commence in Term 4.
Most Year 12 students have completed the majority of their course work with a few school-based assessment requirements to finalise for the year. When students are focused, manage their time, complete tasks to the best of their abilities and meet deadlines they are successful in achieving good results. Students are encouraged to clarify their thinking with teachers and meticulously edit and refine their work before submitting assessments to achieve high standards. I congratulate students on their efforts thus far and recommend to all Year 12 students to persevere through the challenges, be self-disciplined and determined in the final few months and give your very best effort in the pursuit of success.

Not even the crisp mornings could put a dampener on our Mary MacKillop College winter sports teams who pulled out all stops to celebrate Pink Round on June 25. This round was held to help raise awareness and encourage discussions surrounding breast and ovarian cancers. Well done to all of our teams for supporting the cause. A canteen voucher was available for the most creatively dressed team and awarded according to the most number of likes received on the College Facebook page. Congratulations to Year 11/12 MMC 1 for their very creative efforts!
Winter sport is coming to an end shortly, with semi-finals and finals held during Weeks 3 and 4 this term. Good luck to all of our teams for their final round games this weekend and we wish the best of luck to those teams competing in the upcoming finals.
Knockout Sport has been keeping our MacKillop teams busy over the past few weeks. Congratulations to our Year 7/8 Knockout Soccer Team who defeated Salisbury High School and Parafield Gardens in Round 1. Good luck to the students who will be playing Kildare in the coming weeks to advance through to the state finals. Our Year 7/8 Knockout Netball Team defeated Riverbanks College 36-28 in their first game of Round 2. The girls then came back from three goals down at three quarter time against Gleeson in their second match to force the game into overtime. Unfortunately the team lost by three goals after a very intense period of overtime. Well done to the team for their commitment to training in the lead up to the games and the determination they displayed throughout both matches.
Our Open Knockout Volleyball team showed resilience and displayed great sportsmanship throughout their Round 1 matches on Wednesday 3 August. They progressed to the semi finals where they were defeated by Woodcroft College, who were the eventual winners for the day. Congratulations to the team for the positive and respectful attitudes that were displayed on the day.
Best of luck to our Open Knockout Netball team who are competing in Round 2 next week. I look forward to sharing the results of both Knockout Sport and Winter Sport in the upcoming newsletter.
Reminders for Sport at MMC:
Blue Round will be held on August 6 to raise awareness for Mental Health. Teams are encouraged to dress in blue to show their support.
Semi-finals and finals will be held in Weeks 3 and 4 of Term 3. Please check the Weekly Schedule carefully.
Nominations for Term 4 Sport will open later this term. Students will be informed through notices in the bulletin and via email once Edval Choice is open.

Specialist Netball Pathway:
From 2024 onwards - In Year 10 students who have completed the Specialist Netball program can elect Stage 1 Integrated Learning (Specialist Netball).
From 2025 onwards - In Year 11 students who have completed Year 10 Integrated Learning (Specialist Netball) can elect Stage 2 Integrated Learning (Specialist Netball)
VISION
It is anticipated that the Specialist Netball Program will:
Provide students with the opportunity to develop their sporting potential towards the ‘elite’ level whilst maintaining their performance in academic studies.
Provide students with quality coaching and feedback on their development in the school environment.
Last week, a large number of students in Year 7 and 8 trialled for a position in the 2023 Specialist Netball program. We commend those students on trialling and for demonstrating courage towards their netball endeavours. Students should have received a letter during the week outlining the outcome from the trials.
Participation in Term 2 and 3 Saturday netball will still be available for students of any ability to play.
